Fredericksburg, VA

The new five mile downriver racecourse for the Great Rappahannock Whitewater Canoe Race (GRWCR) is guaranteed to provide excitement and challenge all racers. With the recent removal of Embrey Dam another mile of excellent whitewater has been created below the I-95 Bridge. It replaces the flat stretch of river created by the dam and perhaps more important the portage around the dam is gone forever. The new course was raced on for the first time last year and every class winner at last year’s races presently holds a course record. With the addition of more fast water and no portage the race times are a bit faster. The family oriented GRWCR is purposely designed to be more fun than flat-out competition. However, the ACA Middle States Division Whitewater Championship nonetheless results in some furious paddling. There are also sprint races each day, Saturday (solo sprints) and Sunday (tandem sprints) which are ~1 mile through the fall line to Old Mill Park. The marathon race on Sunday morning (~20 miles), starts on the Rapidan River and finishes at Old Mill Park in Fredericksburg. The race committee sincerely hopes that everyone has a good time and enjoys their day on the river!

NOTES:
1. Races are ACA sanctioned so helmets and life vests are required for all races.
2. Proceeds from this event benefit the Fredericksburg Rescue Squad and The Friends of the Rappahannock.
